Dr. Gregory Wiener

Dr. Patrick Sweet was born and raised in Ventura, California. Dr. Sweet is a veteran and served in the active and now reserve component of the US Navy. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia for college and obtained his Doctor of Medicine from the VCU Medical College of Virginia. His postgraduate training is split between the Navy and then University of California, San Diego, where has had seven years total post graduate training and holds a certificate in Advanced Procedures with a special focus on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

After many years supporting the GI needs of rural locations, Dr. Sweet took a position with a well-known transplant hepatology group and advanced his skills in the care of patients with liver disease. This has led to additional expertise with liver diseases such as fatty liver, steatohepatitis, viral hepatitis and alcoholic liver disease. He has shepherded many patients with end stage liver disease who ultimately went on to obtain a lifesaving liver transplant for their condition.
He continues to provide part time support as a basic GI and Liver consultant in several rural locations providing quality endoscopy services to patients who have poor access to care. He is on staff at five hospitals in Southern California and holds endoscopy privileges at four of them, including Sharp Coronado and Sharp Grossmont. Additionally, he is on staff at Magnolia Surgery Center in El Cajon and in the South Bay both Alfa Surgery Center and Endoscopy Center of Chula Vista.

Civically, he is a member of the San Diego Colorectal Roundtable and UCSD Moore’s Cancer Center Community Outreach and Engagement Committee. In 2022 he completed a tour as board member of San Diego AFP and prior to that he was board member on the American Association of Primary Care Endoscopy (AAPCE). He is also founding member and chair of the American Board of Physicians and Surgeons Board of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
Academically, he holds a voluntary appointment in the University of California San Diego School of Medicine as Associate Health Sciences Clinical Professor. In this capacity he gives lectures in the UCSD School of Medicine and has rotators shadow him in hospitals and clinics. Dr Sweet has published many articles and book chapters. He has been assistant investigator and primary investigator in many clinical trials.

Dr Sweet continues to serve in the Navy Reserve and is currently Battalion Surgeon to 2nd Battalion 23rd Marines. He holds the rank of commander. He is the father of two sons with whom he enjoys camping and exploring the wilderness of our beautiful country. Finally, he owns a vineyard and just had his first vintage in 2021.
